Frequently Asked questions

General

  • Origin: The first cat café opened in 1998 in Taipei, Taiwan, and quickly expanded throughout Asia and into Europe. Since then, cat cafés have spread throughout the world. Cat cafés moved into North America in 2014, with the first one opening in Montreal. California was next, and then New York. There are presently ~140 cat cafés in the US.

Definition: A cat café is a place where people can relax with friends and felines while enjoying a drink or snack. Many cafés house rescue cats that are available for adoption. Some cafés also house cats that are in permanent residence.

  • Please, no! Our purpose is to find homes for our rescue cats, and we have plenty of them here.

  • The startup costs and ongoing expenses of a cat café are substantial. The two primary ways that cat cafés can generate income are: 1. entry fees, and 2. food and drink sales. The entry fee is our main source of income since public health code prohibits us from preparing and serving food. Therefore, the income generated from the pre-packed food and beverages that we are permitted to sell is limited. Since we are not a non-profit, we cannot have volunteer help. The entry fee helps us with start up costs and operating expenses like payroll, lease, utilities, cat care, veterinary expenses, etc. Your payment helps us to fulfill our mission: rescuing and improving the lives of homeless cats.

  • All of our kittens and cats are from our rescue partner, A Chance For Love Rescue. Our cats are from Connecticut. We do not import cats from out of state.

All of our adoptable cats are spayed/neutered, vaccinated against Rabies & Feline Distemper (RCCP), tested for FIV/FeLV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus & Feline Leukemia), microchipped, & fecal tested for parasites prior to adoption.

  • Visit our Donate page to make a donation.

All the Single Kitties is not a not-profit organization therefore any contributions made are not tax deductible. Your contribution will go towards the ongoing care of our cats until they are adopted.

Donations made directly to A Chance For Love Rescue, our 501 (c)(3) non-profit rescue partner, are tax deductible to the extent allowable by law. (Please consult a qualified tax advisor for advice on your individual tax situation.)

  • You must be at least 6 years old to enter the cat café. As adorable and sweet as kittens and cats are, they are also very fragile, and sometimes unpredictable creatures. It can be extremely risky having young children around them. We strictly enforce our age policy for the safety of your babies and ours.

Children ages 6-12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Children 6-9 must be accompanied by 1 adult per child. Children ages 10-12 may be accompanied by 1 adult per 3 children.

Children 13-17 may enter the café without adult supervision.

Private parties: In certain circumstances, there may be an exception to the minimum age policy for a private family party. We will consider children younger than 6 on a case by case basis, depending on the number of people in your party and the children’s ages. Contact us for more details.

All children under the age of 18 must have a youth waiver signed by their adult parent, caregiver or legal guardian prior to entering the kitty lounge. There are no exceptions.

  • NO. Please do not bring stray cats to us. We are not an intake facility and we cannot accept them. Our cats come from our rescue partner, and we know their history. We cannot introduce homeless cats with potential unknown medical issues to our cat family. Please, if you find a stray or abandoned cat, contact a local shelter or veterinarian to get them to a safe place to receive the care they need.

  • Our cats’ well-being is our top priority. We have implemented this set of rules for the safety of both our cats and our visitors.

    1) Upon entering the kitty lounge, you will be asked to sanitize your hands and remove your shoes. Please wear socks (no bare feet). We have disposable socks available if you do not have them. If you are not comfortable removing your shoes, we understand, and we will provide shoe coverings.

Why do we want you to take your shoes off? We try to maintain the cleanest and healthiest environment for our cats and visitors. Foot traffic increases the risk of germs and dirt that may not be healthy for our cats. Also, cats are notorious for getting under foot and if this happens, it is far less painful for them with shoes off! Removing the shoes allows for less danger to the cats.

    2) Please speak softly and move slowly. Loud voices and sudden movements can startle the cats. Never chase a cat. Cats live on their own terms, and we respect that. We recommend sitting on or as close to the floor as possible and let the cats come to you. If they stay, great! If they go, then let them go. It doesn’t mean they don’t like you. Kittens have short attention spans.

    3) Do not pick up a cat from standing position. If you want to hold a cat, we prefer that you are sitting down with them in your lap. Our staff is happy to assist you with holding a cat.

    4) Please do not wake a sleeping cat.

    5) Do not open the doors to and from the kitty lounge without a store host present. Cats are very fast and can slip out quickly.

    6) You may eat and drink in the kitty lounge but please do not feed the cats or let them drink from your cup.

    7) We encourage picture taking. Please make sure your flash is off so that the cats are not startled.

    8) Children must be 6 or older. Children 13 and under must have adult supervision.

  • Public health code prohibits us from preparing and serving food. However, we are allowed to sell pre-packaged treats and drinks that are available for purchase in a space that is separate from the cats. You are allowed to eat and drink in the kitty lounge, and you may also bring in your own food and drink to enjoy during your visit. Please do not feed the cats!

  • No. As a for-profit private sector employer, we are not permitted to have volunteers per the FSLA (Fair Standards Labor Act).

Volunteer opportunities may be available at our rescue partner, A Chance For Love Rescue, that is a non-profit organization.

Adopt

  • How it works: All of our cats at the café are available for adoption through our rescue partner, A Chance For Love Rescue. If you are interested in adopting a cat, please visit our adopt page to begin the process.

Please be advised that we do NOT adopt out single kittens unless there is an age appropriate cat already in the home.

Kittens that are bonded MUST be adopted together.

We only adopt to Connecticut residents. We are not able to facilitate out of state adoptions.

You will be asked to call your veterinarian and give permission for them to speak with a rescue.

Should your application be considered after the veterinary reference, a home visit will be scheduled - in person or virtually.

The adoption process could take up to 10 days - if you do not hear from a volunteer within this time frame, please understand that your application was not considered. We do our best to match our cats with the right fit for them.

All the Single Kitties is a foster home for our adoptable cats. We do not directly adopt our cats. The adoption is done through our rescue partner. We are not involved in the adoption process, and we are not able to provide updates on your application, including the final decision that is made by our rescue partner.

Adoptions are done by appointment on Mondays.

On adoption day, please bring your carrier and adoption fee made payable to A Chance For Love Rescue.

  • All of our adoptable cats are spayed/neutered, vaccinated against Rabies & Feline Distemper (RCCP), tested for FIV/FeLV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus & Feline Leukemia), microchipped, & fecal tested for parasites prior to adoption.

  • Adoption fees:

    Kittens (up to 1 year) - $250

    Kitten pairs - $475

    Adult cats (1-6 yrs) - $200

    Mature cats (7-10 yrs) - $175
